Our URGENCY to Serve
During America’s long military involvement in Vietnam, it is estimated that 67,000 children were born as a result of unions between American military and Vietnamese women. Due to the chaos of the war years, the movement of military personnel, and the fact that a typical deployment was for one year, many of the men who fathered these children were unaware of their existence, and Vietnamese mothers often lacked sufficient information with which to contact the men with whom they had been involved. These uncertainties, including the stigma of having illegitimate Amerasian babies, also led the abandonment of these children altogether.
